This is one of our favorite videos at Fox School of Wine, done for us by Park City Television. It provides some important content for those wanting to know about the weight or body of a wine. Essentially, the wine alcohol level determines the weight of a wine.

The basic rule is this: lighter wines go better with lighter foods, and heavier wines go better with heavier foods. But how do you know the wine alcohol level? Which is a light wine and which is a heavy wine?

Food Pairings by Wine Alcohol Level

White Wines by Alcohol Level or Weight

Riesling – try pairing with lighter fare such as an Asian stir fry
Sauvignon Blanc – light pasta or chicken without heavy sauce
Chardonnay – chicken with heavy sauce or heavier pastas

Red Wines by Alcohol Level or Weight

Pinot Noir – grilled flank steak over greens
Malbec & Cabernet – grilled meat with a light sauce
Shiraz / Syrah –  heavier cuts of beef with heavy sauces
